Gingerbread House

Day seven of my Christmas photo challenge! WHAAAT! December is going way too fast!

I am, however, very excited about this post. Today’s theme is ‘Baking’, and as it has become tradition that I make a gingerbread house every Christmas, I thought I’d put some Bublé on (his christmas album of course), and get started!

As I don’t do things by halves, I baked mine from scratch with the help of the queen of baking herself, Mary Berry. I’ve used her trusty recipe for a couple of years now as it makes AMAZING gingerbread! You can take a look at it here. But, if you are not a keen baker and just want to do the decorating I would suggest buying a pre-made kit because it is a lot of work.

I gave myself two days to do it, but it is possible to complete it in one full day. I decided to make the biscuits one day and do the construction and decorating the following day. I really enjoyed doing both parts, and the house smelt SO good!

The construction bit is rather scary as you would obviously be gutted if it all collapsed and broke. But just make sure you have plenty of royal icing to slap on and keep it in place.

Once the tense bit is over you can decorate. Yay! I love that you can do it however you like with whatever you like. I mainly used some christmas sprinkles we had in the cupboard. Mine is a tad messy, but I think that adds to the charm. Well that’s what I am telling myself anyway!

You can have a little watch of the process here, I can assure it is easier to do than you think!

TA DA! I am so pleased with my little gingerbread house and it is currently making a great christmassy feature in our kitchen. I am not letting anyone touch it for at least two weeks though. It took way too long for it to be eaten too soon!

I actually had lots of dough left over, so I got my festive cutters out and made some biscuits with it as well. I just left these plain as I was all decorated out after doing the gingerbread house. But they are so yummy, especially when paired with a nice cup of tea.

If you are going to make a gingerbread house this year, I’d love to see it! It will definitely get you in the christmas mood.

Lots of love,
